Day Two - October 31st, 2010 -- HalloweenHere it is Halloween. Somehow we never saw one costume on our ride today. We went for a breakfast at the motel and it was raining and about 34F. We left the motel at 8:15h with an overcast sky but not raining at the minute. Fortunately, we never had any rain all day. If you are following on a map, we take 219 South to Salamanca. Then, because 219 becomes a multi-lane, divided highway, we follow 219 business which is also 417 back to 219 about 8 miles later. But just south of Salamanca on the 417, Dave rode over some glass, spotted it, and stopped to pull out the glass, but it was to late. He had a flat tire. We all stopped and took time to replace his tube, and we were again mobile. Just a slight delay. We rode to Bradford,PA, where we should have been last night, but weren't. We didn't even stop for a break and continued on. Just south of Bradford there was a white MG parked on our left at a service station. The driver yelled to us as we were going by. Fred Zahn from Fort Erie, Ont, was the driver. Fred has done this Florida Bound Bicycle Ride in the past. More than once. He had read on Dales site, CrazyGuyOnABike (note the next page tags at the top of his site to follow through - there are also pictures) that we only made it to Ellicottville yesterday, he had nothing else to do, so he drove down to see us and just to say 'Hi' and give us best wishes. We had a ten minute visit and... he went home. Just out for a Sunday drive. Thanks Fred. We carried on 219 until Ridgeway, PA. After climbing a great hill, we stopped at the top at the Royal Drive-in for a hot dog ($1.25 can you believe) and, ready for this? Ice cream. It's freezing out but... (the high temp today was 42F) The time is now 16:15h (4:15 p.m.) and it will be dark by 18:15h or 20 (6:15 or 20). Shall we quit? Or try to make the next town about 27 miles away? We decide to go for it. We're mobile again. At 18:15h (6:15), Dave and I (with Becky right on our heels, or is that tires?) arrive in Dubois. Dale and Paul have been here about 15 mins. There is a Best Western Motel right here on the corner and we check in. After cleaning up, we go to Hoss's for dinner. We then return to the motel. We call it a night. Today we covered about 159.5k or close to 100 miles. My riding time (that's time on the bike, not counting breaks) 8h 11m. I averaged 19.4k/h.
